Mudras

Yoga Mudras.

Mudras are different hand positions one has to keep during the practise of pranayama it is very essential as these various mudras help in directing the prana or Life Force Energy to various parts of the body.

The various types of mudras are:

o CHIN MUDRA (MEDITATION MUDRA): Bend the thumb and index finger to bring their tips to contact. Do not apply pressure. The other three fingers are stretched out straight, with no gaps between them.

Benefits: This helps in increasing mind power, memory, mental concentration etc. and cures sleeplessness and tension.

o PRANA MUDRA (Life Energy): Bend the thumb, ring finger and little finger to bring their tips into contact. Do not apply pressure.

Benefits: It increases life force, cures nervousness and fatigue. It also improves
eyesight.

o SURYA MUDRA (Fire): Bend the ring finger to touch the palm. Press it with the thumb.

Benefits: It generates heat in the body, helps digestion and fat reduction.

o VAYU MUDRA (Air): Bend the index finger to touch the Mount of Venus. Press the index finger with the thumb. The other three fingers are stretched out. with no gaps between them.

Benefits: It cures Rheumatism, Arthritis, Gout, Parkinson's disease and blood circulation defects. For better results, also practice Prana Mudra.

o PRITHVI MUDRA (Earth): Bend the thumb and ring finger to bring their tips to contact. Do not apply pressure. The other three fingers are stretched out straight, with no gaps between them.

Benefits: It cures weakness of the body and mind. It increases life force (Chetana) and gives new vigor to an ailing person. It also gives peace of mind.

o VARUNA MUDRA (Water): Bend the thumb and little finger to bring their tips to contact. Do not apply pressure. The other three fingers are stretched out straight, with no gaps between them.

Benefits: It cures impurities of blood, skin ailments, and makes the skin smooth. Also cures gastro-enteritis and any other diseases that cause dehydration.

o SHUNYA MUDRA (Space): Bend the middle finger to touch the Mount of Venus. Press the middle finger with the thumb. The other three fingers are stretched out, with no gaps between them.

Benefits: It cures Earache, Deafness, Vertigo etc. For best results, practice this mudra for 40 to 60 minutes.

o SHIVALINGA MUDRA: Join both palms and interlock the fingers. The left thumb is vertical. The right thumb and index finger encircle it.



THE 'VYANA' GROUP OF MUDRAS


o PRANA MUDRA (HRUDAYA MUDRA): Bend the index finger to touch the base of thumb. Bend the middle and ring fingers to touch the tip of thumb. The little finger is stretched out straight.
Benefits: Cures ailments related to Heart Chakra.

o APANA MUDRA: Bend the thumb, index finger and middle finger to bring their tips to contact. Do not apply pressure. The ring finger and little finger are stretched out straight.
Benefits: Cures ailments related to the Sacral Plexus and Root Chakra.

o SAMANA MUDRA: Bend the thumb, ring finger and little finger to bring their tips into contact. Do not apply pressure.
Benefits: Cures ailments related to Solar Plexus

o UDANA MUDRA: Bend the thumb, index finger, middle finger and ring finger to bring their tips into contact. Do not apply pressure. The little finger is stretched out straight.
Benefits: Cures ailments related to the Crown, Brow and Throat Chakras.


PROCEDURE FOR PRACTICING MUDRAS


o Sit in Vajrasana posture.
o Hold the same mudra in both hands simultaneously.
o Place the mudras on the thighs, such that the palm faces upward, and the stretched fingers face away from the body. (Shivalinga mudra is an exception.)
o Breathe slowly and deeply for two or three minutes.
